Filling in the Blanks Outreach Post

A Missions Lifegroup from Harvest Time Church recently had the amazing opportunity to serve with Filling in The Blanks, a local nonprofit that packages and distributes food to kids in schools who do not have consistent access to meals. This impactful organization helps fight childhood hunger in our community, and we’ve had the privilege of partnering with them on several occasions.

This particular event was another great chance for our church to engage in local outreach and truly live out the mission of serving others. Although I wasn’t able to attend in person at this specific event due to being away at college, I wasn't able to take any photos but I was able to share the story behind this day by creating a social media recap.

The Missions Committee wanted to highlight the event and inspire others to get involved with similar volunteer opportunities. I designed an Instagram carousel post using Adobe Photoshop, choosing various photos that were taken by a volunteer during the event. My goal was to create a visually engaging and interactive post that not only showcased the event, but also to hopefully encourage others to serve at a similar event in the future.

Using our brand colors, which are white and blue, I added text that spelled out "Filling in The Blanks." I experimented with adding depth to the image through masking, making elements overlap and interact with the text, which added a more interactive look. This was my first time trying this strategy, and I learned a lot throughout the process.

Sharing our church’s community service efforts through design was incredibly rewarding, and hopefully encourage people to participate in similar events in the future. I’m excited to continue growing these creative skills and use them to inspire others to serve in future outreach events.

Even though I couldn’t be physically present, working on the recap allowed me to still feel connected to the mission and heart of the event. It reminded me that serving doesn’t always have to be hands-on, and sometimes, using the skills and gifts you’ve been given, like design or storytelling, can make just as meaningful of an impact. Visual storytelling can be very powerful and can make a big difference on how events are seen.

Through this experience, I’ve grown more confident in combining my creative passions with ministry. I’ve always loved visual design, but this gave me a new perspective on how it can be used to promote meaningful causes and bring attention to the great work being done in our community. It’s taught me that media and ministry can go hand in hand.

I’m grateful to be part of a church that values outreach and gives young people a chance to contribute in ways that align with their strengths. Whether it’s packing meals, capturing moments, or designing graphics, there’s a place for everyone to serve. I look forward to finding even more ways to stay involved and to continue using creativity as a tool for encouragement and impact.
